He and Engadget founder Peter Rojas have just soft-launched their latest foray into the world of gadgets, fittingly (and simply) named... gdgt. Right now they're just getting off the ground, but they've got a new podcast up, and we expect some great content to follow. It should be noted that Peter and Ryan have reached out to various voices in the tech community (yours truly included, along with Gizmodo editor Brian Lam) to advise and input on the new property, which should provide for spirited mashups about all the technology you know (or don't know yet) and love. Hit the read link to check it all out!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Some news from the (new) editor's desk

As you already may know, today is Ryan Block's last day as editor-in-chief of Engadget, and, consequently, the beginning of my tenure in that same position. If you've ever met Ryan, read his work here on the site (and you'd better have), or seen one of his appearances on television, then you know that he's that rare kind of obsessive technology nerd who also happens to be incredibly erudite and funny. Along with founder Peter Rojas, he made Engadget what it is today, so while there's no question that he'll be missed here, we've got great expectations about his new project, and we're happy to say he'll remain on-board as editor-at-large for columns, advice, and picking up the tab when he's in town.

All of that said, however, I'm incredibly excited about getting started on what tomorrow brings: the next phase of Engadget's evolution. Stepping into the role that Ryan is vacating isn't just about emulating the accomplishments that he and Peter worked for, but building off of those successes and bringing something new to the table, and you can be sure that's what I plan on doing. Still, what's core to Engadget won't change, and we'll continue to be the definitive voice in tech journalism thanks to the tireless work of our team (the best in the industry), and the dedication of the legions of readers that visit this site every day (also the best in the industry). It's a huge honor and challenge to take the reins here, and I know it's going to be an amazing ride.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Some news from the editor's desk

For most of us here, at some point the sensation of breaking the news takes hold and turns into something else, something much more like an addiction. It really gets into you, keeps you up at night, makes you stay in on weekends. It's in Engadget's DNA, and it's what's kept me glued to the site most waking hours of most days for over four years now.

But fresh challenges can also be addictive, which is why I've decided to step down as editor of this publication in late August so as to start a new company. I'm extremely excited -- but there's also simply no way I can give up working with Engadget that easily, so I'll remain on as editor-at-large, where I'll have a longer-term advisory role to the site (and do some writing from time to time, as well).

I'll be leaving Engadget in the immensely talented hands of Josh Topolsky, whose vision and voice will ensure the site lives up to its legacy as gadget publication nonpareil. Also, Engadget's current Managing Editor Joshua Fruhlinger will soon begin to formally oversee the AOL Tech network, including Switched, TUAW, Download Squad, and the Engadget network. With Josh Topolsky at the helm and Joshua Fruhlinger's stewardship, I have no doubt that Engadget won't just carry on, but will become even better than ever. Read on.
Continue reading Some news from the editor's desk

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Introducing Engadget Poland!

Whoa, hard to believe its been three years since the last internationalized version of Engadget launched, but we're back and have a number of new sites in the pipeline -- kicking off with Engadget in Polish!

Why Polish, you ask? Well, besides the fact that we had some amazing talent waiting in the wings to blow it out, it's also a smaller (dare we say underserved?) market to soft-launch in that allows us to work out the kinks as we prepare to do even more international versions of Engadget in the coming weeks and months.

So if Polish isn't your bag, just hang tight, you'll be seeing even more localized Engadgets soon enough. And if it is, head on over and welcome our Polish team to the fold!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Poll: fixed or variable width content for Engadget?

As of a couple redesigns ago, Engadget's content column has been variable width, meaning the wider your browser, the wider the content. Readers with big widescreen monitors can feel the full effect, but we're also cognizant of the reading issues go along with having too much width, so we've been toying with the idea of going back to a fixed-width layout for the site. What do you think, how wide is wide enough for reading Engadget?

View Poll

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

The winners of the 2007 Engadget Awards!

It's been well over a year since our last big redesign, which in gadget time means our last design was unveiled circa original Walkman. So we're freshening up the whole joint -- all seven sites -- with a brand new design. Oh, and we're also adding an eighth site to the Engadget network: Switched!

Our latest addition, Switched will be dishing out features for those with a more casual interest in tech, as well as highlighting fresh, hand-picked tech news from our network of sister sites. So expect to see hot stories from Engadget classic, Mobile, HD, TUAW, and Download Squad running over there, as well as news from other geeky Weblogs, Inc. sites like Joystiq, Xbox 360 Fanboy, and Wii Fanboy.

As for Engadget's new design, we went through and really cleaned up the joint, yanking out old modules and ads wherever possible. You might spot our new and improved photo gallery browsing and updated looks on things like comments and polls, but it's hardest to miss the new rotating carousel over on the right. Keep an eye on that thing, it's where we'll be plugging in our biggest stories and must-see features.

Of course, launching eight sites at the same time is bound to cause a few problems, so please tap that first adopter attitude and bear with us as we squish bugs and tweak styles. And definitely hit us up in comments to let us know what you think (or if you see anything wonky)!

P.S. -Big ups to the gang that worked tirelessly to make this happen: Matt, Mark, Erik, Gavin, Celly, Alex, Christoph, Charlie, Marty, and the rest of the crew!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Painting the town magenta

Okay, okay, technically our birthday was yesterday (what, no cake? And you didn't even call?), but we just wanted to take a brief moment to thank you, our ridiculously dedicated, obsessive, and somehow still-growing audience for making Engadget the runaway success it's been. We know it's a cliché, but none of us would have the privilege of doing what we do without your support, and it's pretty hard for any of us to imagine going back to a world where Engadget didn't exist. You may have heard a little something about the Greener Gadgets Conference, a gathering in New York focused on cleaner, renewable, recyclable, or generally forward-thinking technology and design. At the end of the one-day event, Core77 editor-in-chief Allan Chochinov MC'd a showcase of entrants to a design competition held by the Greener Gadgets team, which were then vetted and discussed by co-organizer (and Inhabitat editor-in-chief) Jill Fehrenbacher, Valerie Casey of IDEO and The Designers Accord, and our own special-somebody, Ryan Block. When the dust settled, first prize went to crowd favorite Ener-Jar -- a DIY project which allows you to easily view how much energy an appliance is using. Second place was snapped up by the Gravia, a gravity-based lamp which generates its own power by slowly dropping a weight in its center. The third place spot was nabbed by the Green Cell Universal Battery, a standardized battery which could be swapped out in vending machines. Sure, they probably won't inspire you to trade in your gas-guzzling Hummer for a bike any time soon, but this stuff might at least get you thinking in the right direction. Check the video after the break to see how it all went down.
Continue reading Greener Gadgets Design Competition winners on display

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Yeah, about those server problems...

Long time Engadget readers know it's been a while since we've seen a service outage during Steve Jobs keynotes, which basically come close to making asplode the internets. Today, unfortunately, we did see some issues -- we're hosted by AOL, which obviously has more bandwidth than God, and yet still two data centers went out. Of course, there are far more data centers hosting us than just two, so a lot of readers saw no issues whatsoever. We are already in the midst of a post-mortem, but it's pretty clear you all must really love what we've got going on here, because this was easily our most trafficked live coverage to date.

The upshot, of course, is that we're fully back online right now and anticipate zero further issues throughout the day. So head on over and hit up our hands-ons and check out all the news of all the new Apple gear! Don't worry, we can handle it.

Apple MacBook Air first hands-on
Apple TV Take 2 hands-on

The MacBook Air
The MacBook Air SuperDrive
Meet the new MacBook family
Apple introduces Time Capsule, a NAS companion to Time Machine
Apple unveils the Apple TV, take 2
iPhone firmware 1.1.3 update announced: it's just like we heard
Apple introduces iTunes movie rentals, HD rentals
Live from Macworld 2008: Steve Jobs keynote

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Gear and loathing in Las Vegas - Engadget has left the building

Hard to believe, but the 150,000 some-odd people that flooded into Vegas for CES have all gone home -- including your Engadget editors. Sure, it wasn't the most exciting CES in recent memory, but it wasn't without merit, either. Why, just think of the eight thousand HDTVs announced, blockbuster format war news, or iriver's unexpectedly show-stealing lineup. One thing's certainly for sure: you demanded we give wall-to-wall coverage of CES, and we'd like to hope we did you right. See you at CES 2009 -- and every day in between!

Gallery: Gear and loathing in Las Vegas - Engadget has left the building

Continue reading Gear and loathing in Las Vegas - Engadget has left the building

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Hands-on with David Caruso

Those paying close attention won't be surprised to find out that today marks a special day in the history of Engadget. It brings us no small amount of pride to help announce a dear friend and cohort's new venture: Peter Rojas, who founded Engadget, Joystiq, and Gizmodo, is launching his latest company today, RCRD LBL.

A joint venture with Downtown Records (who retain such acts as Gnarles Barkley and Cold War Kids), RCRD LBL represents a completely fresh take on the distribution structure of music, offering all-digital, all-free music for streaming or download without DRM. Yeah, seriously, free, unrestricted, legal music downloads. RCRD LBL's catalogue already has music from partner labels like Warp and Dim Mak, too, with tracks from a few artists you may have heard from like Mos Def, Bloc Party, and The Stills.

Of course, anyone who knows Pete knows he's one of the few people in this world fanatic enough about both technology and music to pull something like this off. So feel free to head on over to RCRD LBL and show some love -- and try not to blow up their servers too badly, ok? For the fourth year running we're extremely honored that our faithful (and fanatical) readers came out in droves to ensure we were awarded Best Tech Blog in the annual Weblog Awards! Although at first we weren't immediately sure who actually took home the prize since there seemed to be some ballot stuffing (or at very least a number of huge offices all swarming to vote), the Weblog Awards team spent the weekend poring over the their server logs and proved without a doubt that the title once again lies with Engadget. Of course, the honor is actually all yours: you're the ones who support the site and voted for us. So here's to you -- and us. Together forever.

-Your pals at Engadget

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

The Engadget search Dashboard widget

Engadget is no stranger to widgets, we've seen Dashboard and Konfabulator versions of our RSS feed in the past, but the latest in this illustrious line of widgetry is meant for searching the past instead of providing convenient updates to the present. Yeah, we know you've been hearing a lot about the 2007 Weblog Awards in the last couple of days as your source(s) for news across a variety of topics have likely been shamelessly whoring for votes in a bid for a little recognition. Well, as you may have learned, our little site has been honored by being nominated to run against a number of other fine publications for the title of Best Technology Blog. Much love to everyone who's voted for us (and continues to do so) up to once daily per IP address until November 8th. Oh, and let the best blog win. And we mean the best blog.

It's with great happiness that I'm able to announce the promotion of Ryan Block to editor-in-chief of Engadget, and my transition to editorial director of the site. It's a move which is long overdue and one which reflects Ryan's enormous contribution and dedication to Engadget, as well as the fact that I'm spending a significant portion of my time on a number of outside projects (right now I'm praying that HGTV never decides to air the second season of I Want That! Tech Toys).

Tricking Ryan into writing for Engadget was probably the smartest thing I've ever done, and I'm incredibly excited and proud to see him take on this new role. Please join me in congratulating him!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Peter Rojas

(Almost) every statistic you ever wanted to know about Engadget

Never underestimate a teenager with some hacking skills and a bit of spare time. Yuvi Panda lovingly scraped the hell out of Engadget and culled everything about our site into a set of graphs and charts and stats that blew even our addled minds. Not to be missed if you ever wondered, say, what minute of the hour we post the most news on.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Lots of mentions in the New Yorker's Mossberg profile

Not that we'd want to steal the show from the inimitable Walt Mossberg, but we were pretty stoked to see ourselves up in lights in the New Yorker's profile written by none other than Ken Auletta. (Even Engadget commenter Dermot81 got a shoutout in the profile.) Here are a few clips from our mentions:

"On January 9th, when, at the annual MacWorld conference, Steve Jobs, the C.E.O. of Apple, offered the first glimpse of Apple's forthcoming iPhone, a combination cell phone and music player, the blog Engadget.com had more traffic than the Times' Web site."

"Bloggers have taken note of [Mossberg getting Apple products early]. A comment posted in April on Engadget, by Dermot81, read, 'Mossberg may be the biggest Apple fanboy on the face of the planet, so I'd take any review he does of an Apple product with a grain of salt.'"

"Of the blogs that review products, Engadget, now owned by AOL, has the biggest audience; it gets about eight million unique visitors per month. It also has its own office, six hundred square feet on the top floor of a five-story walkup on Allen Street, on the Lower East Side, which doubles as the apartment of Peter Rojas, its founder. Three P.C.s are on his desk, and one of his windows frames the Empire State Building, several miles uptown. Rojas, who just turned thirty-two, studied at Harvard and got a master's degree in English literature from the University of Sussex, in England; like Mossberg, he started as a print journalist, freelancing for various publications.

Also like Mossberg, Rojas accepts no gifts and no junkets, and returns the products that he tests. 'The only asset you have to differentiate yourself from competitors is your credibility,' he says. A corner of his apartment is piled with FedEx boxes. Rojas estimates that he has written more than six thousand posts for Engadget, and another four thousand for his previous blog, Gizmodo. A Mossberg column runs about nine hundred words; posts written by Rojas, three full-time employees, and paid freelancers average between fifty and a hundred and fifty words.

With the reviews he wrote for publications, Rojas says, 'you kind of had to water it down and assume the audience didn't really care about what you write about and you had to 'hook' them into the article. What I realized about blogging is you're not going to read a blog about gadgets unless you're really interested in gadgets. I assume that our readers know that Sprint and Verizon are CDMA networks, and that T-Mobile and A.T.&T./Cingular are GSM networks.' And by "writing up," he adds, 'the higher we aim the more it grows, because the audience responds to that.' Rojas says that what Mossberg does 'is great, because he is able to translate for an audience that may not care, whereas I write for an audience that already cares.' Mossberg says that he has respect for Engadget, but, "like so many of the tech or gadget Web sites, it is more of a product-alert system, mostly printing descriptions, albeit with attitude. It really doesn't do hands-on reviews."

This isn't the first time Monsieur Mossberg and Engadget have crossed paths, and we're hoping it won't be the last. We know we've been laying a bit low lately, but apparently we caught someone's eye over at CNN. With CES comes the expectedly massive news deluge, so we've also launched a CES optimized page for browsing Engadget. As you've probably noticed above, you can select which news layout you want for the week -- classic Engadget, or CES optimized (also at ces.engadget.com), which you can switch between at will.

You're not going to miss any news on either page -- all our stories hit both layouts. It's all the same content, just a better way to read it during the CES news rush. Click on for a breakdown of the content and how the page works.

Welcome to CES 2007, Engadget style.
Continue reading Engadget now optimized for CES

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Engadget Software

People have been developing small bits of Engadget software and whatnot for a while now, so we figured it was time to give them a proper home. Enter Engadget Software! We thought a few of these might be useful with CES coming up and all, so check 'em out.

Developers: the proposition is simple. Develop Engadget software, and as you might expect, we'll post about it -- but we'll also host your builds here. Sorry, we're not offering CVS, purchasing services or anything like that, just a fat pipe for the community to download your Engadget software creations.

Users: feel free to check back here for the latest versions. We can't guarantee they won't blow up your computer or crash a lot or anything, but where else are you going to find Engadget software? Also, we'd love to hear about what kind of Engadget software you'd like to see built -- maybe someone who's up to the task will start in on the project (see above).

Check out our widgets after the break!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ryan Block

Engadget Reader Meetup in Boston this Thursday, September 28th

That's right, in case you haven't heard, we're bringing Engadget to Boston. We're very proud to announce the birth of our latest spin-off, Engadget HD, where we'll have obsessive coverage of everything related to high-definition.

For Engadget HD we're teaming up with the amazingly talented bloggers of HD Beat. We've been working closely with them since last year, and it just made sense to go all the way and not only relaunch HD Beat under the Engadget brand, but to fully integrate the editorial teams (like we've done with Engadget Mobile). The result should be fuller and more comprehensive coverage of all things HD, with Engadget continuing to hit all the major announcements and Engadget HD going in-depth in a way that isn't possible on the main site. They'll also be writing about stuff like home theater and high-end audio gear that we've always wanted to have better coverage of on Engadget.

To kick off the site we're giving away a bunch of HDTVs over at Engadget HD. Welcome to the new Engadget! It's taken us a ridiculously long time to get to this point (could everyone please stop having keynotes we have to liveblog?), but we're finally ready to introduce the latest version of Engadget. We haven't just refreshed the design, either, we've added a bunch of new features that should make Engadget a little more user-friendly. Oh, and to celebrate the occasion we're giving away tens of thousands of dollars of gear -- dozens of prizes -- for the next few weeks. Yeah, seriously, you're gonna want to watch out.

For now, click on for a rundown of all the new features, plus some info on how you can give us feedback about bugs and whatever else we can to make the site even better. We're still working out the bugs, so please be patient with us as we get Engadget solid again -- you guys are first adopters, you can handle it -- and keep in mind that we'll be rolling out more improvements over the coming weeks and months.

Oh, and if things aren't yet looking right, clear your cache! Thanks, and on with the show...
Continue reading Welcome to the new Engadget!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Peter Rojas

Engadget's quite in-pressive lately

Is it just us, or is all this hubbub about scooping RIM on the BlackBerry Pearl (among other things) been earning us some serious mentions in the press lately? Then we figured what the hell, we might as well just ask! Shoot us an email at focus at engadget dawt com letting us know you're interested in becoming a part of our first ever Engadget focus group, and we'll randomly select some amount of readers and send you guys a little email questionnaire. (Oh, and for reference, any questions answered are for our own edification -- we won't be selling the info or anything weird and lame like that.)
