Now look, we're not calling you stupid or anything -- but you don't really know what to do with that phone... do you? Why don't you make things easier on everyone and just pick up this handy tome, written by our in-house Dostoyevsky, Engadget Mobile lead Chris Ziegler. We don't want to ruin anything for you here, but by the time you're done with this sweet piece, you'll be so handy with a Pre, Palm will call you for tech support. Is that overselling it? Nah.

Buy this book: Chris Ziegler's 'Palm Pre for Dummies'! originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 13 Oct 2009 19:03:00 EST. We don't know exactly what it is about the Engadget logo that people love so much (well, we have some ideas), but our name and likeness does seem to pop up in the most unusual places. This time, it's more unusual than, er... usual. Apparently, our sweet E is being used as the prime designator for a Croatian "civil society organization" called e-misija. We don't pretend to get exactly what it is they do, but anything with a promo video as sublime as the clip after the break sounds cool to us.

Note: Our logo is all over their YouTube page! Who better to kick off Unbagging with, right? In the picture above you'll note Josh's Leatherman, dual EV-DO cards, heart pills, vast array of phones (all active, mind you), and totally awesome Ray-Ban Wayfarer IIs. Before you ask: yes, he does carry all this stuff around. Take a look at the full rundown of assets after the break.
In case you missed it, our fearless leader Joshua Topolsky made a guest appearance on tonight's Attack of the Show, waxing intellectual with host Kevin Pereira about Apple's recent handlings with Google Voice, Eric Schmidt, and of course discussion on the dual uni-powered tablet -- you'll see what we mean. When Ryan Block (our former Editor-in-chief) and Peter Rojas (founder of Engadget, Gizmodo, and RCRD LBL) announced last year that they were embarking on a new project together, alarm bells went off across the interblogs. Following nearly 12 months of rampant speculation, the duo's hard work is finally revealed. Combining the best of social networking, forums, news aggregation, and wiki-based sites, gdgt presents a fairly awe-inspiring range of tools for the hardcore gadget lover.

Imagine if Facebook, Wikipedia, your favorite forum, and Google Reader all got mashed into one gigantic, delicious smoothie, and you might begin to get the idea of gdgt. Instead of retreading territory in which they've already blazed a path, Ryan and Peter present a logical step forward for the gadget community -- a place where you can discuss, dissect, and grow your passion with other like minded individuals. It's an ambitious project with lots of really cool stuff to discover, like product comparison tools, the ability to track gadgets you own (or used to own, or want), news from top gadget sites (wink wink), and embeddable widgets.

Look, we've found the best way in life to learn about something is to scuttle the user manual and dive right in -- we highly suggest you do the same and take gdgt out for a spin. We think you'll like what you find.

Congrats Peter and Ryan!

Peter Rojas and Ryan Block launch gdgt -- the Swiss Army knife of tech sites originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 14:00:00 EST. As we noted when we heard about our nomination for this award, it's not about the prizes and plaques for us at Engadget. That said, when news came down the line that we'd won the EPpy Award for "Best Consumer Technology Blog," we did feel a pang of pride. It's always nice to be recognized for doing solid work, especially when that work is something you truly love.

We won't bore you with any sappy acceptance speeches, but we will say that we're psyched to be able to bring tech news to you guys every day. Next up for us? We're gonna keep on keepin' on -- and we've got some pretty cool stuff in the works.

Stay tuned... it's going to be an amazing year!

-Team Engadget

Engadget wins the 2009 EPpy Award for Best Consumer Technology Blog! originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 May 2009 16:00:00 EST. Still, we thought it was pretty cool when we heard that we'd been nominated for an EPpy Award in the category of "Best Consumer Technology Blog." We're not alone, either -- the AOL family picked up the most nominations of any one company, with sites likes FanHouse and BloggingStocks getting nods as well. At the end of the day, we don't really care if we win or lose, but it's kind of nice to be recognized for doing what you love and doing it well -- so... thanks!

We're nominated for an EPpy Award! originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Apr 2009 13:14:00 EST. You know, we were as surprised as anyone to see a totally out-of-context quote of ours used on a Monster Cable site (without permission, mind you) to sell the company's "Beats by Dre" headphones (you can see the screen cap after the break). It's ironic, really, given that we currently have a blacklist in place for the overpriced cable-maker because of their rotten business practices (like regularly going after other companies that happen to use the word monster in their name, faking performance tests, and generally bilking customers out of their hard-earned dough). Regardless, if Monster wants to use a quote from Engadget, that's no problem. We suggest this one:

Monster Cable sucks.

Update: Monster has removed the quote from the site. Now that was fast. Power to the people!

[Thanks, Michael K.]
Continue reading Engadget endorses Monster Cable? If you're like us, you're probably taking an ever-increasing interest in gadgets with an eco slant. If that's the case -- and we think that it is -- you'll want to check into Greener Gadgets, a day dedicated to the quest for sustainable consumer electronics and better solutions for our industry, launched by Jill Fehrenbacher, Editor-in-chief of Inhabitat. This Friday (February 27th, 2009), you can join "innovators, entrepreneurs, visionaries, and eco-designers" in New York City to explore some of those solutions, take a look at green gadgetry, and hear from a handful of speakers on the cutting edge of Earth-friendly electronics. Oh, and there's that killer design competition to round it all up. This year, our own Editor-in-chief, Joshua Topolsky, will be moderating a panel on gadget recycling called "Closing the Loop In Cradle to Cradle," so if you needed some added incentive to attend, you've got it. Today is the last day for registration, so follow the read link and sign yourself up!

Greener Gadgets 2009, this Friday in NYC originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 13:30:00 EST. Look, we don't normally talk about that wacky old medium -- the printed word -- but this is a special case. Our very own Chris Ziegler, whom many of us refer to around here as "the modern-day Hemingway," has just recently put pen to paper (er, finger to keyboard) and written the definitive tome on all things G1. Namely, T-Mobile G1 For Dummies. If you at all care about the state of our nation, world peace, finding the Ark of the Covenant, creating the perfect salsa, or just figuring out how to set the alarm clock on your phone: this is the book for you. In all seriousness, we're super proud of Chris' efforts here, and we hope -- if you're totally into the G1, like we know you are -- you'll take a peek at these totally boss pages.

Buy this book: Chris Ziegler's 'T-Mobile G1 For Dummies' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 19:34:00 EST. Well, the year has come and gone, and with it, our 365 -- or in this case, 366 -- days of posting. We've seen some pretty amazing stuff, gotten to play with a stack of awesome gear, and watched the site grow by leaps and bounds (we just had our biggest day ever in October). We thought we'd cap the year off with a look back at the posts that got the most heat. One thing that's clear? People really love (or hate) Apple. Check out the top 20 of the year below, and be sure to truck over to Engadget Mobile and Engadget HD for their year-end round-ups!

Top 20 most trafficked posts of 2008 (in order)

He and Engadget founder Peter Rojas have just soft-launched their latest foray into the world of gadgets, fittingly (and simply) named... gdgt. Right now they're just getting off the ground, but they've got a new podcast up, and we expect some great content to follow. It should be noted that Peter and Ryan have reached out to various voices in the tech community (yours truly included, along with Gizmodo editor Brian Lam) to advise and input on the new property, which should provide for spirited mashups about all the technology you know (or don't know yet) and love. Hit the read link to check it all out!

Peter Rojas and Ryan Block introduce gdgt, gdgt weekly originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 04 Sep 2008 13:00:00 EST. If you've ever met Ryan, read his work here on the site (and you'd better have), or seen one of his appearances on television, then you know that he's that rare kind of obsessive technology nerd who also happens to be incredibly erudite and funny. Along with founder Peter Rojas, he made Engadget what it is today, so while there's no question that he'll be missed here, we've got great expectations about his new project, and we're happy to say he'll remain on-board as editor-at-large for columns, advice, and picking up the tab when he's in town.

All of that said, however, I'm incredibly excited about getting started on what tomorrow brings: the next phase of Engadget's evolution. Stepping into the role that Ryan is vacating isn't just about emulating the accomplishments that he and Peter worked for, but building off of those successes and bringing something new to the table, and you can be sure that's what I plan on doing. Still, what's core to Engadget won't change, and we'll continue to be the definitive voice in tech journalism thanks to the tireless work of our team (the best in the industry), and the dedication of the legions of readers that visit this site every day (also the best in the industry). It's a huge honor and challenge to take the reins here, and I know it's going to be an amazing ride.

Some news from the (new) editor's desk originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 22 Aug 2008 17:27:00 EST. It really gets into you, keeps you up at night, makes you stay in on weekends. It's in Engadget's DNA, and it's what's kept me glued to the site most waking hours of most days for over four years now.

But fresh challenges can also be addictive, which is why I've decided to step down as editor of this publication in late August so as to start a new company. I'm extremely excited -- but there's also simply no way I can give up working with Engadget that easily, so I'll remain on as editor-at-large, where I'll have a longer-term advisory role to the site (and do some writing from time to time, as well).

I'll be leaving Engadget in the immensely talented hands of Josh Topolsky, whose vision and voice will ensure the site lives up to its legacy as gadget publication nonpareil. Also, Engadget's current Managing Editor Joshua Fruhlinger will soon begin to formally oversee the AOL Tech network, including Switched, TUAW, Download Squad, and the Engadget network. With Josh Topolsky at the helm and Joshua Fruhlinger's stewardship, I have no doubt that Engadget won't just carry on, but will become even better than ever. Read on.
Continue reading Some news from the editor's desk

Some news from the editor's desk originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 13:00:00 EST. Whoa, hard to believe its been three years since the last internationalized version of Engadget launched, but we're back and have a number of new sites in the pipeline -- kicking off with Engadget in Polish!

Why Polish, you ask? Well, besides the fact that we had some amazing talent waiting in the wings to blow it out, it's also a smaller (dare we say underserved?) market to soft-launch in that allows us to work out the kinks as we prepare to do even more international versions of Engadget in the coming weeks and months.

So if Polish isn't your bag, just hang tight, you'll be seeing even more localized Engadgets soon enough. And if it is, head on over and welcome our Polish team to the fold!

Introducing Engadget Poland! originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 May 2008 14:32:00 EST. As of a couple redesigns ago, Engadget's content column has been variable width, meaning the wider your browser, the wider the content. Readers with big widescreen monitors can feel the full effect, but we're also cognizant of the reading issues go along with having too much width, so we've been toying with the idea of going back to a fixed-width layout for the site. What do you think, how wide is wide enough for reading Engadget?

View Poll

Poll: fixed or variable width content for Engadget? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 May 2008 16:09:00 EST. It's been well over a year since our last big redesign, which in gadget time means our last design was unveiled circa original Walkman. So we're freshening up the whole joint -- all seven sites -- with a brand new design. Oh, and we're also adding an eighth site to the Engadget network: Switched!

Our latest addition, Switched will be dishing out features for those with a more casual interest in tech, as well as highlighting fresh, hand-picked tech news from our network of sister sites. So expect to see hot stories from Engadget classic, Mobile, HD, TUAW, and Download Squad running over there, as well as news from other geeky Weblogs, Inc. sites like Joystiq, Xbox 360 Fanboy, and Wii Fanboy.

As for Engadget's new design, we went through and really cleaned up the joint, yanking out old modules and ads wherever possible. You might spot our new and improved photo gallery browsing and updated looks on things like comments and polls, but it's hardest to miss the new rotating carousel over on the right. Keep an eye on that thing, it's where we'll be plugging in our biggest stories and must-see features.

Of course, launching eight sites at the same time is bound to cause a few problems, so please tap that first adopter attitude and bear with us as we squish bugs and tweak styles. And definitely hit us up in comments to let us know what you think (or if you see anything wonky)!

P.S. -Big ups to the gang that worked tirelessly to make this happen: Matt, Mark, Erik, Gavin, Celly, Alex, Christoph, Charlie, Marty, and the rest of the crew!

Engadget gets a new look and adds Switched to the family! originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 02:11:00 EST. Okay, okay, technically our birthday was yesterday (what, no cake? And you didn't even call?), but we just wanted to take a brief moment to thank you, our ridiculously dedicated, obsessive, and somehow still-growing audience for making Engadget the runaway success it's been. We know it's a cliché, but none of us would have the privilege of doing what we do without your support, and it's pretty hard for any of us to imagine going back to a world where Engadget didn't exist. So thanks!

-Ryan, Peter, and the entire team at Engadget

P.S. -Stick close by, we'll be having a giveaway in a little bit.
P.P.S. -And yes, contrary to popular belief, we are both four years old and were also somehow around in 1985.

Happy 4th birthday... to us! originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 16:35:00 EST. You may have heard a little something about the Greener Gadgets Conference, a gathering in New York focused on cleaner, renewable, recyclable, or generally forward-thinking technology and design. At the end of the one-day event, Core77 editor-in-chief Allan Chochinov MC'd a showcase of entrants to a design competition held by the Greener Gadgets team, which were then vetted and discussed by co-organizer (and Inhabitat editor-in-chief) Jill Fehrenbacher, Valerie Casey of IDEO and The Designers Accord, and our own special-somebody, Ryan Block. When the dust settled, first prize went to crowd favorite Ener-Jar -- a DIY project which allows you to easily view how much energy an appliance is using. Second place was snapped up by the Gravia, a gravity-based lamp which generates its own power by slowly dropping a weight in its center. The third place spot was nabbed by the Green Cell Universal Battery, a standardized battery which could be swapped out in vending machines. Sure, they probably won't inspire you to trade in your gas-guzzling Hummer for a bike any time soon, but this stuff might at least get you thinking in the right direction. Check the video after the break to see how it all went down.
Continue reading Greener Gadgets Design Competition winners on display

Filed under: Misc. Today, unfortunately, we did see some issues -- we're hosted by AOL, which obviously has more bandwidth than God, and yet still two data centers went out. Of course, there are far more data centers hosting us than just two, so a lot of readers saw no issues whatsoever. We are already in the midst of a post-mortem, but it's pretty clear you all must really love what we've got going on here, because this was easily our most trafficked live coverage to date.

The upshot, of course, is that we're fully back online right now and anticipate zero further issues throughout the day. So head on over and hit up our hands-ons and check out all the news of all the new Apple gear! Don't worry, we can handle it.

Apple MacBook Air first hands-on
Apple TV Take 2 hands-on

The MacBook Air
The MacBook Air SuperDrive
Meet the new MacBook family
Apple introduces Time Capsule, a NAS companion to Time Machine
Apple unveils the Apple TV, take 2
iPhone firmware 1.1.3 update announced: it's just like we heard
Apple introduces iTunes movie rentals, HD rentals
Live from Macworld 2008: Steve Jobs keynote
Filed under: Meta

Yeah, about those server problems... originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 14:32:00 EST. Hard to believe, but the 150,000 some-odd people that flooded into Vegas for CES have all gone home -- including your Engadget editors. Sure, it wasn't the most exciting CES in recent memory, but it wasn't without merit, either. Why, just think of the eight thousand HDTVs announced, blockbuster format war news, or iriver's unexpectedly show-stealing lineup. One thing's certainly for sure: you demanded we give wall-to-wall coverage of CES, and we'd like to hope we did you right. The strangest things happen to Engadget editors at CES -- I spent 20 minutes hanging backstage at G4TV with "David" before I realized who he was.

Hands-on with David Caruso originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 16:28:00 EST. Indeed it was a banner year here at Engadget -- completely thanks to you, of course. Google may have its Zeitgeist, but we figured we could at least cap things off with a few lists of the most well-read posts of 2007 (and a few stats, to boot). Also, don't forget to check out the lists at Engadget Mobile and Engadget HD! Those paying close attention won't be surprised to find out that today marks a special day in the history of Engadget. It brings us no small amount of pride to help announce a dear friend and cohort's new venture: Peter Rojas, who founded Engadget, Joystiq, and Gizmodo, is launching his latest company today, RCRD LBL.

A joint venture with Downtown Records (who retain such acts as Gnarles Barkley and Cold War Kids), RCRD LBL represents a completely fresh take on the distribution structure of music, offering all-digital, all-free music for streaming or download without DRM. Yeah, seriously, free, unrestricted, legal music downloads. RCRD LBL's catalogue already has music from partner labels like Warp and Dim Mak, too, with tracks from a few artists you may have heard from like Mos Def, Bloc Party, and The Stills.

Of course, anyone who knows Pete knows he's one of the few people in this world fanatic enough about both technology and music to pull something like this off. So feel free to head on over to RCRD LBL and show some love -- and try not to blow up their servers too badly, ok? It's only day one for these guys.

-Ryan

P.S. -Oh, and no, this doesn't mean we're letting Peter go so easily. We've managed to retain his services a while longer, so those worried about missing out on some of his amazing and instantly recognizable writing need not worry, because he's still a part of team Engadget.

Engadget founder Peter Rojas's new digital music site RCRD LBL launches originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 12:42:00 EST. For the fourth year running we're extremely honored that our faithful (and fanatical) readers came out in droves to ensure we were awarded Best Tech Blog in the annual Weblog Awards! Although at first we weren't immediately sure who actually took home the prize since there seemed to be some ballot stuffing (or at very least a number of huge offices all swarming to vote), the Weblog Awards team spent the weekend poring over the their server logs and proved without a doubt that the title once again lies with Engadget. Of course, the honor is actually all yours: you're the ones who support the site and voted for us. So here's to you -- and us. Together forever.

-Your pals at Engadget

Engadget takes Best Tech Blog for 4th year running in the 2007 Weblog Awards! originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 09:12:00 EST. Engadget is no stranger to widgets, we've seen Dashboard and Konfabulator versions of our RSS feed in the past, but the latest in this illustrious line of widgetry is meant for searching the past instead of providing convenient updates to the present. This is probably your last shot to let your voice be heard in the category of Best Technology Blog.

Much love to everyone who's already voted -- and to everyone else, sorry about the spammy popularity contest angle here, we just always wanted to be Treasurer in our high school student body and are trying oh so hard to relive the dream, you know?

P.S. -PLEASE don't cheat. Even if we won it would still be hollow. Thanks dudes and dudettes.

Update: Wow, it's neck and neck. Every vote is counting at this point, although we're really hoping these guys aren't powering their with Diebold software.

Update 2: Did we win? It kind of looks like we won! Although the peeps at the Weblog awards still need to tabulate, count, recount, etc. We'll see, but in the mean time we'll carry on with our regularly scheduled programming.

Yeah, we know you've been hearing a lot about the 2007 Weblog Awards in the last couple of days as your source(s) for news across a variety of topics have likely been shamelessly whoring for votes in a bid for a little recognition. Well, as you may have learned, our little site has been honored by being nominated to run against a number of other fine publications for the title of Best Technology Blog. Much love to everyone who's voted for us (and continues to do so) up to once daily per IP address until November 8th. Oh, and let the best blog win. And we mean the best blog.

It's with great happiness that I'm able to announce the promotion of Ryan Block to editor-in-chief of Engadget, and my transition to editorial director of the site. It's a move which is long overdue and one which reflects Ryan's enormous contribution and dedication to Engadget, as well as the fact that I'm spending a significant portion of my time on a number of outside projects (right now I'm praying that HGTV never decides to air the second season of I Want That! Please join me in congratulating him!

Announcing some changes at the top originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jun 2007 12:01:00 EST. Never underestimate a teenager with some hacking skills and a bit of spare time. Yuvi Panda lovingly scraped the hell out of Engadget and culled everything about our site into a set of graphs and charts and stats that blew even our addled minds. Not to be missed if you ever wondered, say, what minute of the hour we post the most news on.

(Almost) every statistic you ever wanted to know about Engadget originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 May 2007 02:01:00 EST. (Even Engadget commenter Dermot81 got a shoutout in the profile.) Here are a few clips from our mentions:

"On January 9th, when, at the annual MacWorld conference, Steve Jobs, the C.E.O. of Apple, offered the first glimpse of Apple's forthcoming iPhone, a combination cell phone and music player, the blog Engadget.com had more traffic than the Times' Web site."

"Bloggers have taken note of [Mossberg getting Apple products early]. A comment posted in April on Engadget, by Dermot81, read, 'Mossberg may be the biggest Apple fanboy on the face of the planet, so I'd take any review he does of an Apple product with a grain of salt.'"

"Of the blogs that review products, Engadget, now owned by AOL, has the biggest audience; it gets about eight million unique visitors per month. It also has its own office, six hundred square feet on the top floor of a five-story walkup on Allen Street, on the Lower East Side, which doubles as the apartment of Peter Rojas, its founder. Three P.C.s are on his desk, and one of his windows frames the Empire State Building, several miles uptown. Rojas, who just turned thirty-two, studied at Harvard and got a master's degree in English literature from the University of Sussex, in England; like Mossberg, he started as a print journalist, freelancing for various publications.

Also like Mossberg, Rojas accepts no gifts and no junkets, and returns the products that he tests. 'The only asset you have to differentiate yourself from competitors is your credibility,' he says. A corner of his apartment is piled with FedEx boxes. Rojas estimates that he has written more than six thousand posts for Engadget, and another four thousand for his previous blog, Gizmodo. A Mossberg column runs about nine hundred words; posts written by Rojas, three full-time employees, and paid freelancers average between fifty and a hundred and fifty words.

With the reviews he wrote for publications, Rojas says, 'you kind of had to water it down and assume the audience didn't really care about what you write about and you had to 'hook' them into the article. What I realized about blogging is you're not going to read a blog about gadgets unless you're really interested in gadgets. I assume that our readers know that Sprint and Verizon are CDMA networks, and that T-Mobile and A.T.&T./Cingular are GSM networks.' And by "writing up," he adds, 'the higher we aim the more it grows, because the audience responds to that.' Rojas says that what Mossberg does 'is great, because he is able to translate for an audience that may not care, whereas I write for an audience that already cares.' Mossberg says that he has respect for Engadget, but, "like so many of the tech or gadget Web sites, it is more of a product-alert system, mostly printing descriptions, albeit with attitude. It really doesn't do hands-on reviews."

This isn't the first time Monsieur Mossberg and Engadget have crossed paths, and we're hoping it won't be the last. Here's to you, Unkie Walt.

Lots of mentions in the New Yorker's Mossberg profile originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 May 2007 12:34:00 EST.
